How Belgian chocolate got here

A short history of Belgian chocolate

In the 18th century, the Brussels elite was already drinking hot chocolate, following the fashions of Paris and London.

The praline was born in Brussels. Its story begins with a pharmacy that opened in the Galerie de la Reine in 1857. In 1912, the founder's grandson swapped the medicine for a soft cream filling inside a chocolate shell, and the Belgian praline was invented. The ballotin, the gift box that protects and presents pralines, was designed for them by the same family.

Leonidas Kestekides, a Greek who had become a confectioner in America, came to the 1910 Brussels World's Fair and won a bronze medal. In 1913 he won gold at the World's Fair in Ghent and opened his first tea room there. Later, in Brussels, his nephew Basilio sold chocolates straight from the window of a narrow shop on Boulevard Anspach. This is the house whose chocolates you find here in Canton.

Why Leonidas

A Greek confectioner, a gold medal in Ghent, and the house rules that came after.

Leonidas Kestekides took the bronze medal at the 1910 World's Fair in Brussels, where he met Joanna Emelia Teerlinck. They married in 1912 and settled in Ghent. He took the gold medal at the 1913 World's Fair, held in Ghent that year, and opened his first tea room at 34 Veldstraat.
